Sad to say that center of the lane or edge of the road probably wouldn't have made much difference here. In cases of a vehicle crossing the center line, paying attention ahead is most important. I myself have lapsed attention to oncoming traffic while riding, thinking about other things, etc. I tell myself I need to do better, and also hope that my bright flashing daytime front light will help prevent oncoming traffic from trying to make a passing maneuver while I'm approaching them.
