I tried SPD-SL on my gravel bike. The first time I was on a somewhat mucky trail, I found that I had to use my multi-tool to scrape out the cleats after every time I dismounted.

Since you already own shoes sitting in a closet, why not give them a try. If it doesn't work for you, you're no worse off than if you bought new shoes today, except for a bit of wear on shoes before they go back into the closet.
