When I started to shop for a new bike 2 years ago and when my wife looked for one a year after me we both had the same problem that being, the LBS did not have the size either of us needed in stock. The only option was to have the store "order" the bike and essentially we would purchase that bike site unseen, not test driven etc. Not entirely different from buying the bike on-line. This was the case at 4 different shops near me. This occurs even though the mantra of all LBS's is "The most important thing about a bike is the fit". Well good luck with that.

The Performance bike store chain will actually allow you to order the bike AKA buy it and when it comes in and if you don't fit/like it you can return it for a full refund. However Performance like any other bike store only handles a few manufacturers.
