Would that be the era of ALAN (bonded) or Vitus (AKA Bador, also bonded) or Klein or Cannondale (Tig-welded but...does anybody think that they used thinwalled aluminum tubing?)
Memory could be a bit hazy, but I recall Cannondale advertising talking about having thinner walls to save weight but larger diameter tubing to increase the stiffness. I've never ridden one, but I thought the early aluminium bikes with normal sized tubes had a reputation for being flexy.
