Bikes: ...a few.

Quite honestly I'd rather ride on the road and take the lane. Riding on a bike lane, especially ones that haven't been thought out carefully and are just carved out of the existing road, is more hazardous than not having them because you're riding in the 'gutter', i.e. where all the debris and crap accumulate, so you're sticking as close to the left side of the lane as possible. Drivers see the lane and feel cyclists have their own lane so they can just hug that line as well. End result: lots of close passes. Not a pleasant in my experience.

OTOH, segregated bike lanes away from the main traffic, or running adjacent to traffic, is much better, but these take more time and planning, and money, to build. We have a few of these running through the downtown core. The drawback is that lots of pedestrians use them as well.
