I didn't wear a helmet on the MUP until that day a 3" limb fell from a tree as I rode underneath. It touched the leading edge of my front tire and I rode over it without incident. I figured the bike helmet would be more appropriate for protection from falling objects than the MAGA cap I was wearing or a hard hat, so I started wearing a helmet.
Speaking personally, it is impossible for me to say that it's generally safer or more dangerous. Most of the time I feel far safer, but that's when hardly anyone is there and decent weather. When it's crowded I just want to get off it and onto the streets where it's safer. It's on that crowded MUP that I want the helmet, and on the streets if I'm planning on pushing my limits somewhere.
