Each of the mainstream companies offer a bike that will suit your use. Trek FX, Giant Escape, Specialized Sirrus, Raleigh Cadent, Cannondale Quick, Jamis Coda, Fuji Absolute, etc. In general, you can go to a bike company's website and look for the "fitness bike" area. These are basically road bike-like frames with mountain bike-like components and a flat handlebar. They also universally have 622mm wheels (often called "700c") with smooth tread. These are going to be "performance" oriented hybrids that will be light in weight and nimble in handling.
Don't overlook used options, either. Used models can be very good values. I bought both of my two primary bikes used and saved hundreds of dollars over new. And I invested the money I did save back into them by changing out some of the components to make them more "mine".
Good luck!
