You adapt over days and weeks, and of course it is only a small adaptation compared to the range of climates we encounter, but you can do a lot more intense physical activity in desert heat if you have a few weeks to adapt to it, and even more if you have a lifetime to adapt to it, and yet again more if your ancestral DNA has had dozens or hundreds of generations to adapt to it.
