If they wanted to lessen their reliance on artificial climate, they probably wouldn't live in an area of extreme climate, like Las Vegas etc. All around North America people lived without air-conditioning until the last 50 years or so, adapting in various ways like using ventilation, ceiling fans, shading, midday naps, dugout homes and so on, and physiologic adaptation, and of course air conditioning has made life more comfortable and most people opt for it, but if someone prefers not to use it, or to minimize it's use, those other techniques are still there as well as newer technology, like passive cooling clothing.
