The tunability of cantilever and centre-pull brakes is a two-edged sword. While it permits customized fine tuning to optimize performance for individual preferences, it also requires some knowledge and skill. Conversely, it is also easy for an inexperienced mechanic to totally mess things up. Side-pull, dual-pivot and V-brakes mistake proof this to a large extent, making it easy for even a relatively inexperienced person to set-up the brake and achieve optimum performance. This is not lost on the manufacturers and LBS, who want to reduce the skilled labour, set-up time and potential for lawsuits.
