That's one part of your story that I don't get. Most of the roads I ride on have a 55 mph speed limit. it's not a problem. My riding group includes a former State Police Commandant; so if it was a problem I'm sure I'd have heard about it.
I looked up the bicycle laws for my state, turns out that in this state it's illegal for a bicycle to be part of traffic on roads of 50mph or faster. However they can legally ride on the shoulder of roads with that high of a speed limit.
