I have 2 road bikes with disc brakes. One is Spyre mechanical and one is hydraulic Shimano Ultegra. The hydraulics are superior to mechanical (obviously) from a performance standpoint. My Spesh Roubaix has the mechanical. It's got over 3,000 miles with barely a hint of wear on the pads. Rotors have never warped even though my rims are in serious need of a truing, I have no break rub issues.
Both my bikes would not be considered "new crop" as they were in the transitional period with QR axles. If you take wheels off regularly (roof rack)they can be a pain to line up. I just throw them on, loosen the caliper bolts, squeeze the brake lever, and tighten the caliper bolts. No big deal since I'm used to it. "New crop" thru axles solve that issue.
Like was said before so many bikes have them now it's not much of a choice. I see no real disadvantage to disc brakes unless you are a real weight weenie. The technology will only get better as time goes on. I hope my opinion helps and is on topic!
