Also look at the Shimano Alfine 8 speed internally geared hubs. I have one and it is great having all those gears.
It also fits the bill for care-free shifting by a novice rider.
A word of caution - IIRC, the SA 8 speed hubs are geared for the tiny tires on foldable bikes, so be careful before purchasing one.
