Quit trying to find excuses. Think the problem through and I'm sure you will find a reasonable solution. My crack staff of volunteers has already suggested numerous alternatives. If you really don't want to remove the wheels from the car, try removing them from the bike, for example.

Of course there's always a plan B. In my case, a one-way van rental to bring my bike back. Just a few shifts to my original itinerary to fit rental availability based on Amtrak's short notice.
The point of my note to NNEPRA's board member is to draw attention to a missed opportunity: Bike tourism revenue. The board member is also president of Maine's Chamber of Commerce. Yes, I wanted to complain a bit too.
