We've been riding along the coast this past July. Lots of ATVs, very very few bicycles.
We were looking forward to riding the Sunrise Trail, but we left it as soon as we could. The surface has been turned into loose gravel by the ATVs and lack of maintenance. Locals told us that cyclists don't use it anymore, because it is unpleasant to ride and almost impossible to complete without having several flats.
I also asked why there were no hike and bike campsites (in the northwest). Was told that there are no cyclists, because it is too hilly. I am not sure about the hills, but yeah, not a single cyclist but myself in the White Mountains.

I'd be curious to see statistics on bicycle touring. One of the things that struck us this summer is the race to the bottom in which the vast majority of tourists appear to be engaged in. We saw many campers jumping in their car to go to the bathroom. Enormous RVs are the norm.
I doubt that bike touring has a measurable impact on the economy.
