I'm guessing functionally, that's true. But the Dura Ace 9000 cassette initially had some problems. The newer cassettes have larger cog plates and additional rivets on the 3-gang spider. The new spider is a swap-in for the old one, so while its different I guess it is compatible.
My CS-9000 (original, defective design) broke and was sent to Shimano for warranty replacement. We'll see. Will report back.
