Some people said tektro? Don't they make horrible brakes?
That is a totally ridiculous rationale. First of all you never HAVE to FEEL obligated to do anything bikewise. Second, what is the difference between old group set brakes and old third-party brakes as far as needing replacement. Old brakes is old brakes. The sensible reasons for buying third-party brakes are either to save money, i.e. Tektro and its ilk, or to save weight as in the case of TRP, KCNC, Zero Gravity, etc.

Many folks just replace the few parts that are necessary to keep a group set going. Witness SRAM 11-speed. The 11-speed levers work fine to provide 11 rear speeds using older SRAM 10-speed rear derailleurs and cranks. Lots of folks have simply bought the new levers, cassette, and chain, kept the rest of the 10-speed group set and bogeyed on down the road. Your approach is self-defeating.
