I just put a ruler across the lever tops (hoods retracted). Then view the space between the ruler top and the underneath of the bar tops. That brings your sight line up close enough to the bar (maybe 1/2 inch depending on the width of the ruler) to sight it in very accurately. No level needed.
That's what I usually do - yardstick or other long stick or even 4' of metal plumbing pipe or whathaveyou to sight against the line of the bar tops.
