This is interesting because I have also noticed a "weak sensation" around the shin/calf muscles on one leg (the shorter one - I have a 5mm leg length difference). This might indicate that my saddle was actually a bit too high for that leg. In your case, I'm confused that moving back in the saddle made things easier - wouldn't this generally make your effective seat height taller? (assuming you were moving to rear of the seat tube, thereby making the distance to the BB longer).
because it was less painful than being forward I guess.
