If it's a standard WH-6600, yes it will accept any 8,9 or 10-speed Shimano or SRAM cassette. I'm not sure what you mean by the splines being "half way" down the body unless someone changed the freehub body on yours for an older one.
Down the length of each spline, halfway down the length the height of the spline increases. It is short the first hald, then doubles in size the rest of the way.
