Which gives you the greatest "bang" for the buck? Should I buy e.g. 510 shoes (or something similar) to use with my stock rockhopper pedals (stock pedals just have short, acrylic nubs), or should I swap out my pedals for something with real pedal pins ?
Down the road, I plan on having both, but for now, which is the bigger step up?
Can't really say anything about Five Tens, as I've never owned a pair (although I do plan on getting a pair when I find a good sale). I can say that having a good set of flat pedals with good (replaceable) pins, even when paired with a decent pair of skater shoes can provide a good amount of grip; I have a ratty old pair of 10 year old Vans skate shoes that I only use for riding. Yeah, skate shoes aren't ideal and the soles will get chewed up quite a bit by the pins, but they're a decent "in the meantime" option.
