the only thing i would watch out for is the spacing between the chainrings. if you're trying to do a sub-compact with a 110/74, there are spacing problems when trying to run a 10 speed chain. source: i've tried it.
Been there ... done that with an abortive attempt at half-step-plus-granny with 1990s Campag. Veloce cranks. The spider was too thick for a successful half-step -- the chain would snag between the rings.
