I have two bikes: one with 1x11 (44T w/ 11-42,) and one with 2x11 (52/36 w/ 11-25) and you know what? I manage to survive with both. The double has more top end, but I generally prefer the 1X. I have no cares as to whether or not it's the future of cycling. It's just nice to have options.
Related note, my grandfather's Wastyn Six-Day Special was built in the 1930s as a fixed gear track bike, and he rode it for over 50 years. In it's final iteration, he had softened to the point that he had fitted a 5-speed Campy freewheel in the back. It never had more than five gears on it. And I can guarantee that bike had over a quarter million miles on it before he passed.
Look at all of us soft wheels of cheese with our panoply of gears.
