You're right about the freewheel being Shimano. I see that when I enlarge the image enough.

But the rest of my post holds.

I'm familiar with the details because I was asked to produce the removers back then. The request came from an importer of Chinese bicycles, and I was given an unbranded freewheel to work with, which I assumed was made in China.
