It's more a smooth hard plastic, so it's not grabby even with the pads, and I wouldn't dare climb out of the saddle with them in the clips for fear they'd slip back and out. I was considering building up the bottoms with shoe-goo and then cutting a pedal line to help keep them in place, but I haven't tried it yet.
Hmm, ok. Thanks Joe. They might not work then. Not sure I'm going to find anything like what I need. I need the support of a riding shoe to protect the bottom of my damaged right foot so plain tennis shoes don't work well, plus I'd like a little foot retention to support a proper pedaling stroke. I've thought about slot cleats but my bum left knee really needs my foot to have some float available.
Damn it sucks getting old! Better than the alternative though.
On your idea of the shoe goo and cutting a pedal line, have you seen that there are slot cleats available for modern shoes? They are made for the three bolt Look pattern, but perhaps with a little work could be adapted to the SPD setup on the Giro shoes. Full cleats might be more than your looking for too but just in case...
