Saga of a "stuck" crank
I work PT at a LBS. The other day a lady brings her bike in,a Trek 9700 I believe. She says it makes a bit of a funny noise while riding. So into the stand for a quick check. A bit of tightening on the RD cable and it is good to go. A few minutes later she comes back in says the noise is still there. So I go outside with her and take a test ride. I hate riding bikes that are too small for me! Well right off I see, feel, and hear it is the BB.
No biggie. I show her what is needed a she says fine.
No the fun starts!
Left crank comes off easy. Then the right. It appears someone else messed with it as the threads and no amount of trying would allow the crank puller to gain a hold. So out comes the PD Blaster and tapping on the back side with a drift. Nope no go. Then a bigger hammer and a more aggressive attack. Nope!
So I go to the local auto parts to borrow a puller. Nope too large to work.
So the next day I bring in the "sharp key" as a local Australian calls it. The SawzAll!
A few minutes with this fine tool and a small chisel and the remains of the crank lay on the floor.
We had a take off crank that would fill the bill.
So much for a "easy job"!
