In NYC you no longer need to carry the EZ-Pass in the car. The city is moving to "cashless tolls" billing you via the license plate. If you have an EZ-Pass, and link your license plate to it, they bill your EZ-Pass at the same rate as if you brought the pass with you.
In the not too far future, the pass, as we know it, will cease to exist. EZ-Pass will just be a billing/payment account.
