Even 700x28s were just outside the recommended range. Poor choice of rim for a very capable touring machine.
So I'm running early 90's 26" Matrix Mt Titan rims with Deore hubs on one of my mountain bikes. Obviously it is not possible to mount any, even old school, mountain bike tires and would be remotely close to any recommended tire size. I think the internal width is less than 14mm. That in itself would prevent it from even being sold for use, but thousands were sold and ridden. On the negative side, the longevity of that rim was not very good. That said, I'm running 2.1 Panaracer and WTB on mine.
