There are many clueless people on the planet and many of them drive autos. You need to fold this fact into your cycling to maximize your safety. There is a short section of state highway on one of my routes. On this section there is no shoulder and the guardrail is right alongside the road so no escape route if needed. I avoid riding this section of road by taking a side road. You might think about turning around before the danger zone.
