Rim tape is cheap. So are rim strips. I just pulled some velox off some wheels that I'm sure was on there for 30 years.

Why bother with substitutes that only save pennies in installation cost. Sure, if I didn't have any velox and I had to go riding, I'd use whatever got me on the bike the quickest. Doesn't matter if I flat later. My wife can come pick me up.
