INTRODUCTION

You could say this is an off shoot of "Found At The Co-op" or in this case, non-profit. Whatever it is, Bike Works, where Dfrost and I volunteer, is where this takes place. There are two levels of bike volunteers can work on at BW: the first is kids' bikes and a few for-adult bikes for programs, the second is for-adult bikes either for programs or sales. The second level will also strip bikes, and work on special bikes--stuff that's outside the valuable time, cost, and energy resources of the BW staff. That stuff is high end vintage road bikes that come in on donation. They are not what the bulk of BW clientele is looking for, but they are sold on the floor and can bring in a considerable amount.

The first of these special projects was a 1987 Cannondale ST600 in primer grey and full Shimano 600 (late 6200-era). It required about 13 hours of steady (free!) work on my part, including replacing a snapped rear axle and re-dishing the rear wheel. It turned out great and ended up selling for around $350 in about a week! Great bike, and a nice quick sale for BW. I'm happy, the Recycle & Reuse guys that turn donated bikes into "green" (retail) bikes are happy, and the new owner is happy.

This next project is this 1982 Pro Miyata that's been sitting for a little while. 50cm, replaced components, dirty and or super muddy, with poorly zip-tied on fenders... The blue paint on these is fierce and will shine through any and all dirt. These are special bikes, and we needed to get it looking proper again. I am a super happy clam working on these vintage steeds, so to be allowed/told to do so is music to my ears.

So, as we go to photos, know that these first ones were with my venerable iPhone 4 in its final days of service. I now have a 6 Plus (good deal on it) which is vastly superior in many metrics, with the important one being photography, especially regarding low and/or interior light.

Hope you enjoy the journey!
