The only thing that I can think of that makes this effective is that the sound TO THE DOG must be very different from what we hear.
Maybe it's because the dog suddenly smells that pure air which replaces the air with the smell of a cyclist and the surroundings in it and that confuses the dog because it's used to following it's nose as much as it's eyesight?
