As far as nudging the lever past the first trim position and that causing a shift in the FD cage position without actually engaging a ratchet step, I've experienced that with every Shimano road shifter I've ever used. It isn't unique to the latest series.
The issue is both cable tension and initial position of the derailleur inboard stop. This combination relative to the trim stops inside the left shifter. Set up error. Good FD setup eludes many. Bike shops often get it wrong as well.
