Believe you touched on the reason...cost of implementation. Of course inductive charging can be achieved with a bicycle, laptop, or any device with a small battery...Tesla credited for induction discovery.
PS: there is a concern with this technology...it should be noted. Electromagnetic radiation is a real concern which affects quality of the environment...EMI can cause cancer if too strong...depends on gauss of the EMI field and time of exposure. Of course cell phone chargers have been tested extensively. But designers can't be too greedy about 'rate of charging' which would influence EMI to humans in proximity.
