The time NOT to cover those holes - riding a race in the rain. My first "real" race was the Maine International, 105 miles from the Quebec border (starting literally at customs) and running to Waterville. That year it started raining around 10pm the night before. Never stopped. By mile 25, riding along the Kennebac River, we all knew that a right turn into the river wouldn't get us any wetter. Later the conversations turned to what tires tasted best. Later still the laments of those with shoes lacking holes. Their feet had been floating in a pool for 4 hours. Those of us with proper holed soles never thought about our feet again once they were thoroughly wet.

Those holes are there for a reason! And it isn't cooling!
