Workmanship or obsessiveness, whatever. I'm with Joe Dogg's far simpler and just as effective method. It's worked for me for over 50 years of patching (with glue) and I've never had a patch fail. Just don't try to apply patches at temperatures where the glue freezes before drying (as well as your hands.)
