We have and do "risk...wearing the rim down" and have for decades. It's not like the rim wears out in a few miles. Even if you do wear out a rim, there's hardly any risk involved anyway. The rims don't explode, they tend to bend as the pressure of the tire pushes them outward but it's a slow process and not really a "safety issue".
