I have done that ride with my son, but we started at Sand City and detoured into downtown Carmel for a snack, came back over the hill into Monterey proper. It was a fun ride, though I found it a little stressful in parts. Particularly climbing out of Carmel.
Obviously, if you do opt to ride around the Monterey and Pacific Grove point, you will be at the mercy of tourists. It is quite the zoo until you pass Asilomar...
Been riding Carmel loops, 17m and Monterey coastal trail last few days, all gorgeous rides. I was really motivated by meeting up with a guy riding a single speed on 17m and then did a good part of the Monterey coastal trail with him. Spinning up/down the sand dunes checking out the Monterey bay is quite a high
