Since I wasn't planning on ever suing the helmet manufacturer I glued my shell back on after it was pulled off by some branches.

And yes, there's the recommendation from the helmet maker's to replace after 5 years. But actual studies of old helmets have shown that they still passed the same crash protection tests after a few decades.
