There are ways to determine size without a micrometer or calipers. You can use a drill gauge or drill a few holes of various sizes through a thin piece of wood (1/4, 3/16, and 5/32 is enough for most bikes, 7/32 for some Campy hubs) and see which one the ball bearing fits in.
