I think it might just be lazyness. I sometimes do the reverse. If I'm in the 53 in front and going pretty fast and a hill comes up I'll just sometimes go up to the 23 or even the 25 (largest cog) for a short time until I get over the hill. When I get to the top I can just slip down to a smaller cog again. But I generally don't spend a lot of time/miles doing this.
