I rarely lock my bike. I don't carry a lock unless I'm on a dedicated shopping trip. If I'm out on a ride, the places where I'm likely to stop are far enough from population centers that no one arrives there on foot. i lean the bike up outside a convenience store... no problem.

When I'm riding my folding bike, I'm in neighborhoods where that won't work so well, and there I'll take the bike into the store, folded. That's usually fine. Sometimes they ask me to leave it by the door, and I'm cool with that.
