I'm looking at all these responses and thinking about devolution, or at least about time. It really depends on how long you will be away from the bike. I wouldn't leave a good bike anywhere without a decent U-type lock. If I expect to be away from the bike for short intervals, say just a few minutes, I will carry a light cable-type lock. Mostly I don't carry a lock at all.
