I just put it back together. It took all of 15 minutes with me dropping just about every part at least once. No more play, they pressed right in using the quick release. I used the old bearings as bearing drifts and I was worried I'd have to pry them off, but it wasn't necessary. Now I see the rim has a very slight ding in it, but I'll leave it for now. Radially laced, low spoke wheels are a PITA to true.
I replaced the tube and now I'm good to go, so hopefully tomorrow morning.
And one other thing, the axle itself was pretty small and flimsy feeling. Other axles I've seen are usually a lot more substantial. Maybe that's one reason these Easton/Velomax wheels always felt like riding on air.
