Do you rent? If you don't have to worry about a landlord why not mount a 2x4, nicely finished, on the wall and put some hooks on it? Then you can mount a 1x3 to catch the bottom tire. If you alternate up/down/up/down you can get more in a small space.
Thank for the pic assist. My bikes are already stored on individual stands very close together. Hanging them by the hooks will save some floor area but not linearly if you know what I mean. It won't increase the number of bikes I can store in the same width of the room.
