Also, I wonder where elliptical bikes fall in this discussion-- they have cranks and chains, and all of the other bike parts... mostly. My ride yesterday took me through Solana Beach, which I just found out is where Elliptigo bikes is from-- which explains why I saw so damn many of them in one day, after having seen maybe 3 total... ever.
