I talked to Peter White (a wheel builder here in NH) and he thought I was foolish to use 27 inch rims despite the fact that is what originally it came equiped with from Chicago. Thanks for your's and any other thoughtful suggestions!

Hi Bob,

I agree with spider-man. I used Mavic MA3 700c rims and bought them as complete wheels (with hubs and spokes; so much for the big flange hubs ). They fit fine, except that I had to give up the original 5 cog Regina freewheel in favor of a Campy Veloce 9 speed cassette. It all works, except that the Campy downtube shifter doesn't have enough travel to reliably span all 9 sprockets, so I gave up the smallest (13T). I still have reliable travel across the remaining 8 sprockets (14T-26T), and with the 53T chainwheel I don't miss the small one.

I could have just bought new 700c rims and had them laced to the original hubs if I had really wanted to keep the big flange hubs and retain the Regina 5 speed freewheel, but I'm happy with the way it has turned out.
