Using a 28mm tire right now. I might be able to fit 32mm tires on the bike with fenders, but certainly can't go any larger. Clearing anything larger than a 28 is just a bonus.
check out honjo koken fenders. These are the most solid ones I've seen. Many different variants such as dimpled, smooth, dimpled with rolled stiffening and so on. the stays are 5mm, and the hardware is very solid.
