according to the 1986 and 1987 catalog the reds are both "Guards Red"

Yes it seems they did. However the 89 " red menace" may have used a different color red.I haven't seen one in person but all pics of it look a little different shade.

FWIW it seems the 89s have the most detailed differences. Components (Suntour GPX), parts (winsta bar and stem), color schemes (solid black or red), geometry (steeper angles) frame changes ( lack of flutes on the chain stay).
