for mechanical: avid bb7. accept no substitues. even if you have no disc tab in the back, you're front fork most likely has tabs to run one...... if you only have a disc tab in front, i'd stick with the mech vs. hydro, so that you can dial in similar lever feels. having a cable brake and a hydro brake together makes for annoyance at the bar when braking, in my opinion.

if hydros, if budget and performance together are a requirement, go for the juicy-5 setup. despite what someone said above, not too much brake at all. go for the 160mm, unless you're a big guy, then go for the 185mm up front maybe.

though you can't really go wrong with some of the hayes mags, either.
